We were pleased to welcome guest speaker Jonathan Bielby-Nichols from The Skills Company on National Apprenticeship Week, to deliver a talk to our students about apprenticeships and employability skills.
Students who were considering alternative options to university were informed about the benefits of pursuing a higher apprenticeship. Jonathan said “Having A level qualifications puts you at an excellent advantage in terms of employment opportunities. Higher apprenticeships are aimed at better qualified students and provide a pathway into the world of work at a higher starting salary with increased levels of responsibility compared to school leavers.”
Jonathan went on to explain the application process using live vacancies currently listed on The Skills Company’s website. This gave students a valuable insight into what apprenticeship providers are looking for and the skills they can aim to develop before leaving College.
Interview techniques were also discussed, with Jonathan reminding our students of the importance of making an interview a two way process, which is as much about finding out whether a company is right for you.
The visit was extremely beneficial to our students, particularly Year 13 who are currently at a crucial stage in making the decision on where they plan to progress to after SJR.
We would like to thank Jonathan for his advice and for helping us to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week.
