SJR has won the accolade of ‘Most Inspirational 16-18 Provider of the Year’ at the prestigious Educate Awards.
This category was open to school sixth forms, sixth form colleges and further education or specialist colleges. The judges were looking for the most outstanding delivery of 16 – 18 education in Liverpool City, Lancashire and Cheshire.
The prestigious award was presented at a ceremony held at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. SJR was up against north west England’s finest, so it was amazing to hear St John Rigby College announced as the overall winner.
To rapturous applause and cheers, Principal, Peter McGhee, alongside staff representatives from across the college took to the stage to receive the trophy.
Following the award Peter said, “What a privilege to be awarded as the most inspirational 16-18 provider. We do have an inspirational group of staff and it is nice to collect this on their behalf and on behalf of our students, because they are the ones who inspire us to be the best that we can be every day.”
This award follows on from the college being recognised as Outstanding by Ofsted and being crowned ‘Sixth Form College of the Year’ at The Educate North Awards; leaving us in no doubt that 2017 has been a truly outstanding year for SJR!
Peter McGhee further commented, “SJR is a special place for students to study and achieve and we continue to go from strength to strength. It is particularly good news for the young people of Wigan that the award has stayed in the Borough.”
The shortlisting statement stated: “St John Rigby College is one of only three sixth form colleges to be recognised as Outstanding under the new Ofsted inspection framework, the college has a tradition of success.”
St John Rigby College’s inspirational work goes far beyond inspections. Its innovative Elective Programme provides students with work experience opportunities and skills for the future. Working with employers such as UKFast and National Nuclear Laboratories, the college is equipping students with the skills to go into employment, apprenticeships or university.
Judges’ comments included: “All individuals are valued in this outstanding Sixth Form College. Outstanding achievement is in all areas, both purely academic and also extra-curricular activity.”
Those pupils in Year 11 who have aspirations to study at St John Rigby College should be aware that the closing date for applications is Tuesday 6th February 2018. Prospective students are advised to apply early as demand for places is expected to be very high this year.
