The SJR class of 2017 students have achieved superb results with:

  • A pass rate of almost 100% for the fifth year running
  • Over half of the grades achieved being high grades (A*-B or equivalent)
  • A 17% increase in high grades at St John Rigby College over the past 5 years

The pass rate for Advanced Level courses has once again exceeded 99% and for the third consecutive year, the high grade passes have exceeded 50%.  These grades give further cause for celebration in what has been the most successful year in the college’s history.  These results are the culmination of an academic year in which St John Rigby College:

  • Was judged outstanding in every respect by Ofsted inspectors (and remains one of only three sixth form colleges in the country to have achieved this under the latest inspection criteria, introduced in 2015)
  • Became the eighth highest performing sixth form college in the country for A level progress and the second highest in Greater Manchester behind Rochdale SFC (recognised by the Department for Education performance tables)
  • Received the ‘Educate Award’ for the North of England’s ‘Sixth Form College of the Year 2017’.

Such excellent results and impressive external accolades are all the more significant when recognised within the college’s approach to raising aspirations of all students.  This includes students who would not be afforded the opportunity to study A levels at some other colleges, but applies equally to highly qualified students, including those who will be progressing to prestigious universities, which this year will include both the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford.

Principal Peter McGhee said:

“At St John Rigby College we work tirelessly to ensure our students become the best that they can possibly be.  This hard work and dedication has culminated in another day of celebration for our students, their families and our staff.  These are exceptional results from a remarkable group of young people who have worked extremely hard and have been well supported in order to achieve their potential.

“When Ofsted inspectors visited us in February, they commented that, ‘Excellent teaching results in a high proportion of students making exceptional progress from their starting points.’  It is pleasing to demonstrate that this remains the case and that another group of SJR students are leaving with the grades, self-confidence and independence to enable them to excel in employment or further study.

“In addition to excellent teaching, the main contributory factors to our students’ successes are the pastoral care that they receive and the extra time that our staff spend with them outside of ‘normal’ lessons.  We provide extra time for study and additional support in order to enhance students’ learning and to build their confidence.  It is a joy and a privilege to work with them and I hope that they are as proud as I am of their achievements.”
