SJR Music students have participated in the Music for Youth Proms festival 2015 which culminated with a performance at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London.

A “once in a lifetime experience” was how Corey, an AS Music and Music Technology student and a member of the new Music Elective course The Maestro Programme, described the experience of playing with over 3,000 young musicians from across the UK.

The students were performing as part of the Wigan ITP Brass Band and had competed at regional finals before being selected to play. The band, led by Dave Little, played a number of pieces from their extensive repertoire. SJR Music Department and the Wigan Music service have worked together for many years now to nurture the talents of the best musicians in the Wigan area, with many of the instrumental tutors at St John Rigby working for the local service.

SJR Music Teacher David Wall said, “We are very proud of our students; to perform at the Royal Albert Hall is a fantastic opportunity and we are delighted that so many of our students are performing with the local Wigan bands. We have over 120 music students here and they work hard to balance their time rehearsing in our ensembles with playing in orchestras and bands outside college.”
