AS English students enjoyed a fantastic performance of Shakespeare’s Hamlet at The Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester.
The play deliberately challenged traditional gender perceptions with the casting of renowned actor Maxine Peake (Shameless, The Village, Silks) in the title role, while other male roles were also taken by female actors.
The unique and intimate venue allowed the audience to feel constantly close to the action, while the edgy staging and direction made the story feel current and relevant. It was Peake’s performance that really shone out, though – her body language constantly shifting according to the level of trust she felt in who she was sharing the stage with.
All in all, then, it was a wonderful experience for our students - lifting the Bard’s words from the page to where they were intended to be heard: on the stage.
