National Careers Week – Launch of Career Elective Courses at SJR
The Cardinal in college

At St John Rigby College we are committed to ensuring that all of our students realise their full potential and gain the qualifications and skills required for future success.

The college’s Elective Programme provides students with the best possible preparation for entry into the most prestigious careers and universities.  Electives are available for the most academically gifted students and for those with a particular talent or passion.  The Elective Programme allows students to choose a personalised study schedule from a number of possible pathways, which will have the added benefit of helping them to become ‘Career Ready’.

Students who wish to opt for an Elective can make this a fourth academic subject, retaining the possibility of studying 4 A levels or BTEC equivalents.

The Extended Project qualification is also still available as an Elective, allowing students the freedom to focus on any particular area of interest that they are happy to research and prepare independently, with the support of a specialist tutor.

Others may wish to explore the all-new range of specialist programmes dedicated to a particular career path.

Aspiring lawyers may be interested in the Future Lawyers Elective, offering mock trials with students taking on the various key roles within the courtroom as well as preparation for LNAT exams and attending Law conferences.

Future Journalists are represented with an Elective structured around a journalism training course. A practising journalist will be available for guidance and support through a range of assignments, for example, writing content for the college’s website and newsletter. Visits to Media City UK, newspaper production companies and partner universities are also on offer.

This year two new programmes were launched which will continue to be a part of 2016’s Electives: Future Engineers and Music Maestro. These Electives are aimed at those students with a serious interest in a career in each industry, or a particular passion for the subject area. Both involve elements of theoretical and practical study, along with a range of exciting trips.

The college’s existing programmes for Future Medics and Teachers of Tomorrow have also been incorporated into the Elective Programme and have proved consistently popular over the years. Both involve work experience, the Medics at Wrightington Hospital and the Teachers working in local partner primary and high schools.

Electives currently on offer (with more planned to come) are: Creative Industry, Future Medics and Dentists, Future Sports Therapists, Future Scientists, Future Engineers, Future Leaders, Future Lawyers, Future Entrepreneurs, Future Journalists, Teachers of Tomorrow, Aspiring Artists, Music Maestro, The Extended Project and HE Plus.

At SJR we are excited to welcome students on to the Elective Programme next year and look forward to watching them grow as they reap the rewards of their personalised courses.
