Our second annual ‘SJR Voice’ poetry evening, organised by Hollie Tarbuck and ably assisted by Ryan McCracken – both year 13 students – was a tremendous success.
The first act featured readings from a diverse range of published poetry by students and staff, followed by an intermission when delicious home-baked cakes were enjoyed and a charity raffle was held – many thanks to all our wonderful bakers and those who very kindly donated prizes.
The second act showcased performances of original poems from ex-student and published poet Eva Curless, Ryan himself and fellow year 13 students Dominic Butterworth and Rachel Carter, year 12’s national Poetry By Heart champion Jessica Mason, college librarian Christian Stretton (and his delightful and very talented daughters!), the English department’s trainee teacher and renowned poetry expert George Alaimo and visiting poets from the Wigan circuit, George Melling and Sharon Lowe.
£170 was raised for the charity Mind and a wonderful time was had by all. Thanks to all who supported the event – we look forward to this extraordinary celebration of our beautiful language next year!
