SJR Hosts Taster Day and Parents' Conference
The Cardinal in college

Everyone at St John Rigby College would like to say a huge thank you to all of those who gave up their Saturday on November 21 to attend the College’s Taster Day and Parents’ Conference for prospective students and their families.

The College welcomed over 400 Year 11 students from across the area who had signed up for ‘taster sessions’ in subjects that they are considering studying once they leave school in 2016.

This provided students who are in the process of making the very important decision of where to continue into Further Education with a great deal of reassurance about what they can expect from life after high school.

Parents also benefitted from a day of talks and question and answer sessions with senior representatives from the College.

The feedback from visiting students and parents was overwhelmingly positive, with many students claiming that the day had left them certain that St John Rigby College was the right college for them. Parents were also impressed with all that the College has to offer and said that they were hoping their children would share in their enthusiasm once they met up again at the end of the day!

Although students are able to make visits to colleges with their classmates in Years 10 and 11, Taster Day is a unique experience in which students are timetabled into sessions with other young people they may not know but with whom they do share an interest in their chosen subject areas. This provides a truer representation of what college life will feel like, as like-minded individuals move on from their schools to form a community of new as well as already established friendships.

Principal, Peter McGhee said “This is a challenging but wonderful event provided by St John Rigby College to assist young people and their parents in making important decisions for their future careers. The atmosphere was supportive and positive and it was an uplifting event for all concerned – even the staff who had given up their weekend time to provide this opportunity and whose professionalism and selflessness I would like to commend.”
