Future Journalists Experience Life At The BBC

Future Journalists Elective students visited the BBC for an exclusive behind the scenes tour and an insight into the world of journalism through the eyes of the experts.
On their trip to Media City, the students were given a guided tour by BBC Radio Manchester Drive Time producer Amy Gallagher, around the renowned BBC studios in Salford. They were given a taste of life as a radio journalist by presenter Phil Trow, and Evan (one of the visiting students) even tried having a go himself!
On the tour, Amy let the students experience sitting on the famous red sofa of BBC Breakfast. The studio was fully set up and ready to broadcast for the next day’s show. The students found out that in the table seen in front of the breakfast presenters, there are screens for their autocue. They were taken aback at how small the studio was.
In the BBC Breakfast studio, the visitors enjoyed learning about how the cameras worked and how the professionals used the backdrop to enhance the quality of what you see at home. Figuring out that where the BBC filmed the weather was merely six steps away from the red sofa was baffling for the aspiring journalists.
The students also saw where Match of the Day and BBC Sport are filmed as well as the BBC 5 Live studio along with desk after desk of editors making everything run as smoothly as possible. It was a maze of professional brilliance.
The students relished the rare opportunity to scope out the true meaning of being a journalist and the experience encouraged them to carry on studying their elective course.
