History Students Research the Cold War
SJR History students recently took part in an excellent day of Cold War research at Jodrell Bank, with source analysis and talks from key professors from the University of Manchester.
Students were able to examine the archives of both the observatory and the University itself to uncover the perspectives of both the Soviet Union and the USA during the Cold War. Significantly, students were able to analyse materials that had only recently been discovered in the archives of Manchester library and were previously not accessible to historians. This proved very interesting, as students were able to examine the extent of redaction to hide the nature of the evidence they contained.
The session finished with students unpicking the mystery surrounding the Jodrell Bank site’s role in the space race for both superpowers and the controversial life of its founder Sir Bernard Lovell. This was an excellent opportunity for students to work with university students and professors on a key topic connected to their examination.
