A group of Y12 Media Studies A level students visited the ITV Granada News studios at Media City in Salford to experience life on the “front line” of live TV production.
The full day excursion enabled the students to investigate every aspect of news production and to meet the team behind ITV’s bulletins. They discussed how different stories are selected and placed in the running order with programme editor Rachel Mairs, as well as hearing from camera operators and engineers about how the news is gathered from all around the region.
The students also met weather forecaster Kerrie Gosney and watched her rehearsing for a broadcast, then had a go at sound mixing and controlling the studio from the production gallery with Production Specialist Jay Yates. They also met working journalists and the News programme director, before witnessing the afternoon bulletin going out live from the studio.
Finally, the students met newscaster Tony Morris and had the opportunity to quiz him in a lengthy question and answer session, where he covered a fascinating range of topics, from how he became a journalist and newscaster to the ethics of news reporting.
Overall, the students had a fantastic day, which gave them a lot of real insights into the world of TV news reporting.
