Poetry by Heart

English Focus July 2024

Congratulations to Aidan Kane for being a Poetry by Heart finalist two years running! Aidan, and Head of English, Chris Chandler, were treated to two days of activities in Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, London. On the Sunday evening, they joined the ‘groundlings’ (the name given to those paying a penny in Jacobean England who couldn’t afford seating) to watch a brilliantly funny performance of Much Ado About Nothing. The competition started on Monday, where Aidan got to perform on Shakespeare’s famous stage! He was joined by Poet Laurette Simon Armitage and later, children’s Laurette, Poet Joseph Coelho. Chris said “We are so proud of Aidan and what he has achieved at college over the last two years. To step on to such a famous stage and perform so wonderfully will be a memory he can cherish for life and a perfect end to his time at St John Rigby College. We wish him luck in his English studies at Oxford!”
