Music Performance will provide many performance opportunities and paired with other music subjects, you will have access
to the music theory, music production, and music technology skills necessary for a full career in music.
As part of the course, you will have the opportunity to perform both as a soloist and as part of an ensemble in a variety of situations. If you enjoy performing and want to focus on the more contemporary / popular side of music and performance – this is the course for you.
College entry plus any ONE of the following:
• GCSE Music (minimum grade 4)
• Grade 5 in an instrument
• Grade 5 in music theory
• Related experience of music inside/outside of school
• By audition
You will be assessed through external and internal vocational and academic assessments. Just over 30% of the course will be externally assessed, 70% internally assessed.
Assessment may include performances, rehearsals, community projects, research presentations or written reports.
On the Music Performance course, you will study four units:
• Session styles
• Ensemble performance
• Professional practice in the music industry
• Practical music and theory
The course offers students the chance to focus on their performance skills as a starting point for their further musical study. The course particularly appeals to students with popular contemporary musical interests. Students perform in a variety of situations across the two years on the course. To study the BTEC course at St John Rigby College, you must be a confident performer with a desire to perform in front of others.
Due to the transferable skills that music offers, this course is likely to lead onto a performance-based course at university such as BIMM, Leeds, or Salford.

Our Elective Programme is designed to help you develop your gifts and interests as part of an enhanced level 3 programme. We will help you realise your potential by nurturing your talent and preparing you for study at the most prestigious universities or for progression to competitive higher-level apprenticeships. Your options range from our Honours Programme, which might include following a fourth A level, to specialist Futures Programmes that will support your career goals.
If you’re not quite ready to start on a Level 3 Technical course (T Levels) or a Vocational Level 3 course (BTEC) but want to begin on the path to your chosen career, the Transition Programme could be for you.
Transition Programmes are tailored to prepare students to move onto Technical or Vocational Level 3 study. They will give you the opportunity to improve your English and Maths, your work readiness skills and introduce you to the technical skills and concepts that you will need for future study and employment.
As part of the Transition Programme you will study a BTEC Level 2 Award in your chosen subject area as well as the BTEC Level 2 Extended Award in Work Skills. You will also have the opportunity to resit GCSE English and/or Maths if you have not yet achieved a grade 4.
Entry criteria for Transition Programmes is four grade 3s including grade 3s in English Language and Maths GCSE.
