Future Journalists
You will follow a Journalism training course with a practising journalist and complete a number of assignments including writing articles both for the college’s online newspaper and website. Visits to Media City UK, newspaper production companies and local universities will enable you to develop your journalism skills. You will also participate in national journalism competitions.

Who should follow the programme?

To access this elective, you should be studying either Media Studies or English, but other course combinations are possible.

What activities can you expect to experience?

  • Journalism training course with a practising journalist including: journalistic style and writing to a deadline
  • Writing stories for the college newsletter
  • Writing stories for the college website
  • Visiting speakers including; journalists, former SJR students currently on Journalism degree courses and university admissions personnel
  • Participation in national journalism competitions

You will develop the following employability skills:

What will this elective lead to after SJR?

Students have progressed from SJR onto a range of related courses at university, including: Journalism, Multimedia Journalism, Sports Journalism, Investigative Journalism, Broadcast Journalism. The skills developed on the course are highly transferable and will be of use in a wide variety of other careers.
