Christmas fun

We had the usual Christmas jumper day, party hot chocolate and cake but we added a Christmas tree competition this year. Which was won by the main office. Second prize went to a Computer Science and third prize went to Law and Criminology.

Visual Art Department – Amazing Stain glass window

David (Head of Visual and Performing Arts) was really proud to represent SJR at the reopening of St James’ Church, Orrell this morning where the new stained glass window was unveiled. Pupils from St James’ primary school designed images and the SJR Visual Art department- led by Michael Lowey – put the images together to form the window design.

Medics Dentists and Vets trip

In November, 17 of our Y12 future medics, dentists and vets attended a medicine taster day at Edge Hill. The students attended workshops on “Life as a doctor”, “The importance of Nutrition in medicine” and “Anatomy”. They had the opportunity to experience virtual dissection using a special computerised table that allowed you to view, virtually dissect and manipulate the human body. They also really enjoyed practising clinical skills in the afternoon in a model operating theory and hospital ward where the patients were computerised mannequins that could react and groan! A particular highlight was watching a female mannequin give birth!

Level 2 entry requirements

If you’re not quite ready to start on a Level 3 Technical course (T Levels) or a Vocational Level 3 course (BTEC) but want to begin on the path to your chosen career, the Transition Programme could be for you.  

Transition Programmes are tailored to prepare students to move onto Technical or Vocational Level 3 study. They will give you the opportunity to improve your English and Maths, your work readiness skills and introduce you to the technical skills and concepts that you will need for future study and employment. 

As part of the Transition Programme you will study a BTEC Level 2 Award in your chosen subject area as well as the BTEC Level 2 Extended Award in Work Skills. You will also have the opportunity to resit GCSE English and/or Maths if you have not yet achieved a grade 4. 

Entry criteria for Transition Programmes is four grade 3s including grade 3s in English Language and Maths GCSE.
