Makerfield MP Josh Simons visits SJR

Makerfield MP Josh Simons visits SJR

St John Rigby College had the pleasure of welcoming Josh Simons MP, the newly elected member of parliament for the Makerfield constituency.

Josh met with students studying Government and Politics along with members of the College Amnesty International Group.  At each of these meetings students were given a fantastic insight into his role as an MP and the pressures that face a modern constituency representative.  Topics covered were wide ranging and diverse, with Josh providing considered responses.  Questions included issues such as his motivation to become an MP, the connection an MP needs to the area they represent and local transport.  Following the recent Presidential election in the United States, questions also turned to international topics such as the role of NATO, and the Trump/Starmer relationship.

Josh also discussed his challenges, lobbying and voting since joining the House of Commons.  As part of these discussions Josh offered the students the option of  contacting him for work experience placements and provided the opportunity for them to be involved in devising and assisting to conduct a survey on local public transport services.

The college and student body would like to thank Josh for the excellent insight provided into life as a modern day MP, but also for the open and honest way in which he approached student questions.
