During careers week, our year 12 A level students took a break from the syllabus to look at skills involved in becoming a microbiologists. The students made smear slides of E.coli and B. subtilis and used the gram stain to identify which species of bacteria was gram positive and which was gram negative.
They practiced their microscopy skills using oil immersion lenses to view the bacteria with some amazing results!
A very important career to have as this is important in identifying diseases in people quickly to get the best treatment, helping people to stay healthy by understanding the gut bacteria and the wide ranging uses of bacteria to help us make bread, beer, yoghurt and medicines. Understanding micros will help us with the environment including recycle materials and understanding our ecosystems.
