The Applied Human Biology course can provide the foundation for your future progression in the Health and Science Sector. The course is delivered in an applied context, focusing on the human body and the science behind modern healthcare issues. You will learn the science through real life contexts.
The course involves a has a large element, based on these you will be expected to carry out short research based assignment work either individually or as part of a small team.
You will develop your research, problem solving and study skills. You will also have the opportunity to visit a number of universities and workplaces (either virtually or in real life) to gain an insight into future careers.
College entry to include GCSE Science minimum grade 4,4 or BTEC equivalent and GCSE Mathematics 4, (please refer to the Entry Requirements section for further details).

This new course offers students the chance to further their studies of science that takes a different approach from the traditional A level route. The BTEC Extended Certificate in Applied Human Biology uses a combination of assessment styles to give students confidence that they can apply their knowledge to succeed in the workplace and have the study skills to continue learning on higher education courses and throughout their career.
You will gain an insight into how human lifestyles and Biology impact on the health of a person and populations. You will study the details of important human biological processes, then link them to common health and healthcare issues.
Units studied will include:
Unit 1 (externally assessed exam) – Principles of Applied Human Biology
Unit 2 (internally assessed) – Practical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
Unit 3 (externally assessed task) – Human Biology and Health Issues
Unit 4 (internally assessed) – Applied Human Anatomy and Physiology
The extended certificate is the equivalent size to 1 A Level. When combined with other qualifications within learners can progress into higher education courses such as Occupational Health, Nursing or Midwifery and Sport Science.

Our Elective Programme is designed to help you develop your gifts and interests as part of an enhanced level 3 programme. We will help you realise your potential by nurturing your talent and preparing you for study at the most prestigious universities or for progression to competitive higher-level apprenticeships. Your options range from our Honours Programme, which might include following a fourth A level, to specialist Futures Programmes that will support your career goals.
If you’re not quite ready to start on a Level 3 Technical course (T Levels) or a Vocational Level 3 course (BTEC) but want to begin on the path to your chosen career, the Transition Programme could be for you.
Transition Programmes are tailored to prepare students to move onto Technical or Vocational Level 3 study. They will give you the opportunity to improve your English and Maths, your work readiness skills and introduce you to the technical skills and concepts that you will need for future study and employment.
As part of the Transition Programme you will study a BTEC Level 2 Award in your chosen subject area as well as the BTEC Level 2 Extended Award in Work Skills. You will also have the opportunity to resit GCSE English and/or Maths if you have not yet achieved a grade 4.
Entry criteria for Transition Programmes is four grade 3s including grade 3s in English Language and Maths GCSE.
