Careers Academy

Course introduction

This elective provides students the opportunity to work with leading university academics and professionals on an engineering project. Students will take part in site visits, follow college based lecture programmes and attend residential workshops at the University of Liverpool to complete a Crest Award. Students also have access to HEADSTART programmes which include a one year paid work placement prior to university.

Who should follow the programme?

To access this elective, you will need to be studying both maths and physics.

What activities can you expect to experience?

Completion of the Engineering Education Scheme, run by the Engineering Development Trust
Create a solution to a real live engineering problem, that a company is currently working on
Develop report writing skills and produce a professional engineering report
Produce Gnatt Charts to demonstrate project planning
Attend a residential workshop at a Russell Group University
Present your project work at a university to an audience of academics and employers
Specialist guidance and support in preparing for university and employment
Visits to local universities and participation in practical activities
Visiting speakers covering all of the major engineering disciplines

What will this elective lead to after SJR?

All of the skills and knowledge gained from the programme will support students in their application to study an engineering degree course at university or a Higher Apprenticeship. Student progression to higher education last year was outstanding, with many students currently studying mechanical , aeronautical and electrical engineering.
