Ant and Dec, Jeremy Kyle, Greg James, Jason Manford. Former SJR student, Chris Forshaw has met some of the most well-known names in daytime entertainment after being inspired to pursue a career in the media while taking part in our Journalism Elective course.
Chris came back to college, to talk to this year’s Future Journalists about life at Salford University. The first year TV and Radio Production undergraduate never wanted to go to university until he came across a course he thought was right for him; now Chris has ambitions to become a TV presenter. He explained that he would like “to be on or behind camera” and wants to take the route of starting out as a camera operator, leading to his final goal of presenting.
Last summer, Chris gained the opportunity to experience what goes on behind the scenes of The Jeremy Kyle Show, which then led him to work on the production of Britain’s Got Talent, where he met national treasures, Ant and Dec.
Chris believes that participating in the Future Journalists elective course gave him the confidence to go out and find stories and do interviews on his own. He explained how the experience of getting to use the microphones and sound recording equipment on the course had given him an advantage at university.
The students of the Future Journalists Elective course were encouraged to be bold and reach out to people in the business who can open doors to places in the industry. Chris explained how this independence has transferred to his university life and is one of the many things he enjoys about the transition from college to university. He is now six months into his course at Salford and believes that Journalism has given him both the skills and confidence to be proactive where his future is concerned.
